VENOUS REFLUX DISEASE

Vein Disease

The veins are blood vessels that carry blood from different parts of your body back to the heart. They are an important factor in the cardiovascular system and, with age, can develop certain complications. As an example, one in three Americans suffer from some kind of vein disease over the age of 45.

We strongly recommend paying close attention to any arousing vein problems and taking action in the early stages of the disease by seeking professional medical advice.

Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins is a condition which appears preponderantly in the leg area and is defined by large, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. On the other hand, Spider Veins have similar manifestations, however they are smaller and have a red, purple or blue color. These can also appear visible on the legs, but the face area can be also affected.

Causes of Varicose Veins and Spider Veins: A number of factors predispose a person to varicose veins and spider veins. These include:

  • Heredity
  • Obesity
  • A history of blood clots
  • The use of birth control pills
  • Postmenopausal hormonal replacement
  • Hormonal influences of pregnancy, puberty, and menopause.
  • Occupations that involve a lot of standing, such as nurses, hair stylists, teachers, and factory workers.
  • Conditions that cause increased pressure in the abdomen, such as tumors, constipation, and externally worn garments like girdles.

Spider Veins

Spider Veins is a condition defined by coloured, visible veins in the legs or face, that can appear, in some women, at a young age. However, for other patients, this condition develops further in age, caused by different factors:

Causes of Varicose Veins and Spider Veins: A number of factors predispose a person to spider veins and spider veins. These include:

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal shifts
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuation
  • Sitting or standing for extending period of time
  • Excess pressure in the face area

Venous Stasis Ulcers

Venous Stasis Ulcers or, commonly known as open sores, is a condition caused when the valves in the veins become weak and stop functioning properly. The blood circulates one way in your veins, however, when the valves deteriorate, the blood backs up in the veins, hence creating pressure and accumulation of fluid. The increasing pressure and excess fluid in the veins cause open sore in the legs, above the ankle. Venous Stasis Ulcers is a slow healing condition.

Causes for Venous Stasis Ulcers: Due to the weakness of the valves, the blood path is disturbed. Therefore, the pressure in the vein increases and fluid can accumulate in certain areas of the vein. Because of this condition, the nutrients and oxygen is blocked from reaching the tissue in the affected area, hence causing cells to die and formation of a wound.

Venous Reflux Disease

This condition affects the lower extremities of the body - the legs. Venous Reflux Disease is a condition also known as venous insufficiency and can be the cause of varicose veins. This disease is extremely common, affecting over 25 million Americans.

Causes of Venous Reflux Disease: The disease is caused by several factors such as blood clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis), superficial vein thrombosis and phlebitis. Venous Reflux Disease appears when the blood doesn't flow back to heart properly, being blocked, causing blood pools in the legs.
